Upanishad Ganga TV Serial - Doordarshan DD National (DD1)

Upanishad Ganga TV Serial was a 2012 television drama series telecast on Doordarshan DD National (DD1). The telecast had begun from 11 March 2012 and had contained a total of 52 episodes. The television drama was based on Upanishads and highlighted the central philosophical concepts of Hinduism. Upanishad describes the nature of ultimate reality and describes us the path of human salvation. The Chinmaya Mission, which is a Hindu spiritual organization engaged in the dissemination of Vedanta, had conceptualized the program.

Chinmaya Creations produced it and directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi. Chandraprakash Dwivedi is an Indian film director and script writer, who shot to fame by directing television epic ‘Chanakya’ in 1991. Swami Tejomayananda Saraswati, head of Chinmaya Mission had conceptualized the making of this series. In this episode, veteran actor Abhimanyu Singh had played 33 different roles in many episodes. Episode one gave an introduction to Upanishads. Then it had featured Mahabharat.

The third episode narrated how Ratnakar became sage Valmiki. Dara Shikoh, who translated Upanishads into Persian, was also featured in the serial. A story of various mythological and historical emperor or saints like Chandragupta, Chanakya, Raja Harishchandra, Prahalad, Meerabai, Eknath, Veda-Vyas, Narada, Savithri & Yamraj, Krishna, and Subhadra, etc. were telecast in each episode. It was an excellent research-based drama which gave an idea of Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, Gyan Yoga to Hindu disciples.

Actress Huma Saleem Qureshi played three different characters. Gagan Malik, who had earlier played the role of Rama in Zee TV or even in Sony TV, had played the role of an Indian astronomer Varahamihira. Actor Zakir Hussain played the role of Ratnakar, Dara Shikoh, and Yaksh. The series gave a deep knowledge to viewers why the Veda is divided into four? How again is each of the four Veda sub-divided etc.? Alap Desai has composed the music for this serial.
