Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne TV Serial - Doordarshan DD National (DD1)

Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne was one of the most popular serials of its time. It was so popular that people started using it as a phrase for the day-dreamers. It used to be telecast on DD National, the only television channel of those times and was directed by Prakash Jha, a prominent producer-director-screenwriter. The character of Mugerilal was played by Raghubir Yadav and was somewhat inspired by James Thurber's novel ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’. Raghubir Yadav debuted with Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne in 1990's and became famous thereafter with non-stop career growth.

The plot revolves around Mugerilal, a small office clerk, who is continuously bossed around by his wife at home and boss in the office. To add to his woes, his father-in-law keeps on telling his boastful stories as a police inspector. Poor Mungerilal has only one option of day-dreaming wherein he takes revenge on his boss, his father-in-law and dates his beautiful office colleague. The serial was all about how a middle-class man thinks high of becoming a boss and dating his colleague and that his wife actually respects him and listens to all his orders.

The dreams used to be very funnily enacted and the climax used to be wonderful to keep the audience attached till the end. But day dreams are dreams after all and his wife at the end used to come and wake him up, ruining all his dreams. So the story was all about how middle-class people dream big though that all is not true in real life.
