Sadgati TV Serial - Doordarshan DD National (DD1)

Sadgati is a TV movie directed by Satyajit Ray. Doordarshan broadcasted the TV film in 1981. The Telefilm has Om Puri, Smita Patil, Mohan Agashe, Gita Siddharth, and Richa Mishra in the main roles. The telefilm is based on the short story of the same name by Premchand. Satyajit Ray penned the dialogues and the screenplay. Amrit Rai was the co-writer. Besides scripting and directing, Satyajit Ray composed the music too. Soumendu Roy cranked the camera, and Dulal Dutta is the editor.

The TV movie deals with the Indian caste system and its adversities. Dukhiya is a cobbler who lives in a village. Adjudged as a low-caste person, Dukhiya is married to Jhuria. Dukhiya wants to get his daughter wedded and visits an upper-caste astrologer to fix his daughter’s wedding date. To calculate the right time and tell him the date, the upper caste astrologer asks Dukhiya to work at his home for the day without any cost. Dukhiya agreed to that and had been working all day long without food from the morning. This makes the situation turn against the upper caste person, and he had to face the consequences. The telefilm shows the bad extreme of untouchability in those days. Om Puri, Smita Patil, and Mohan Agashe played excellently well, and the screenplay proved the worth of Satyajit Ray’s product.
