Haath Se Haath Mila was a Youth television show produced in India by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World Service Trust (WST) in partnership with the Government of India's National AIDS Control Program (NACO) and the public broadcaster, Doordarshan. Movie stars from the Hindi film industry joined hands with HIV and AIDS activists to raise awareness about HIV in the weekly television program. A music video and website were also created to increase the initiative from the youth. Haath Se Haath Mila is a 52-episode reality show is which aired on Doordarshan. It shows a Bollywood star in interaction with youngsters who have achieved something in life and work to bring awareness about HIV/AIDS.
The BBC World Service Trust, along with Doordarshan and NACO, has come up with a music video that is presented on the channel, the lyrics of which have been written by Javed Akhtar. The music is composed by Ehsaan, Shankar, and Loy and the singer is Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghosal. The music video Haath Se Haath Mila has been choreographed by Shiamak Davar. It is the first music video to feature fifty of the top stars from the television and film industry, which makes this video unique from the rest of the shows on the small screen. Haath Se Haath Mila used interviews, film clips, film songs, and coverage of challenges to entertain, inform, and educate viewers about HIV/AIDS - and to encourage activism.
Every week, an individual who had made a significant contribution to raising awareness of HIV and AIDS - known as a 'Yuva star' - would join their favorite film star on Haath Se Haath Mila. The Yuva star and the Bollywood star would then set up challenges for each other to help change attitudes and behavior around HIV and AIDS. For example, in one episode, actress Shilpa Shetty traveled to Padubelle village in South India to meet Yuva Star Shanti Noronha. An HIV-positive 31-year-old mother of two sons, Shanti formed a district-level network of positive people who work to create awareness of HIV and AIDS among schoolteachers, students, and migrant workers in her community.
While the show will focus on the personal and professional lives of the youths throughout three episodes, the Yuva stars will also be able to meet their favorite Hindi film stars and create awareness about the virus with them. The show aims to help young people be better informed about HIV/AIDS and prevent transmission of the virus. Shanti accepted Shilpa's challenge to organize a screening of her HIV-related film, Phir Milenge, for the people of her district. While the audience is engrossed watching the movie, Shilpa arrives. Together, the two of them organize a large-scale inter-college dance competition for the area, in which the contestants must also correctly answer HIV-related questions. In total, 21 Bollywood stars and 20 'Yuva' stars appeared in the series.
