Maharaja Ranjit Singh TV Serial - Doordarshan DD National (DD1)

Actor-cum-director Raj Babbar had made a mega serial in 2010 for Delhi Doordarshan. The serial was ‘Maharaja Ranjit Singh’ which was based on the ruler of India Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The series was telecast every Tuesday on DD from April 13, 2010. This mega serial project could have gone on air before five years, but it could not take off as Raj Babbar had taken the scripts and approached many private channels and faced some financial constraints too. Later on, he zeroed his thoughts on Doordarshan and DD, and Raj Babbar reached an agreement so that the serial got aired somehow on Doordarshan. While making this series, actor Raj Babbar had taken detailed ideas and had done research from various Sikh scholars.

The series began with an episode featuring when Nadir Shah invaded India in 1739, and it covered till the period of 1792 when Maharaja’s father Maha Singh was appointed as ruler. This great leader of India had died in 1839 and often named as ‘Sher-e-Punjab’ and established a vast kingdom stretching from Afghanistan, Punjab, and Kashmir. The actor also played the role of the Maharaja when he attained of 35 in the series while two other actors were seen playing other two young version of Maharaja. The dialogue of this serial was a mix of Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu and it was telecast on DD National. Actor Raj Babbar was also the narrator of this serial.

Music was by Jagjit Singh and lyrics was penned by Surjit Pattar. The cinematography was by Anil Sehgal, and Jabbar Khan did action design. Rajiv Khandelwal provided special effects, and editor of this series was Ravi Bhushan. Costume designs were undertaken b Dolly Ahluwalia; Chetan Pathak was the art director, and the director of the series was Sikander Bharti and Chitrrarth. Nadira Babbar and Kukku Babbar was the producer of the series.Actor Raj Babbar himself conceived the series.
