Kahkashan’ is a television series that paid a rich tribute to the Urdu language and to the Islamic song. Actor Jalal Agha had directed this series. Some of the greatest Urdu poet’s life was sketched through this drama. They included famous Urdu poets such as Firaq Gorakhpuri, Josh Malihabadi, Jigar Moradabadi, Makhdoom Mohiuddin, Hasrat Mohani, and Majaz Lucknawi. The total number of episodes were eighteen, and it was telecast since 1991 to 1992.
Jagjit Singh composed music. In this serial, producer Ali Sardar Jafri who is a poet and also lyricist had given narration in the background. He introduced the various freedom fighters and Urdu poets who have left behind their masterpiece of works. Actor Pariskshit Sahni played the role of Josh Malihabadi. Actor Irrfan Khan played the role of famous revolutionary Urdu poet and Marxist political activist of India Makhdoom Mohiuddin in Kahkashan. Actor Farooq Shaikh had played Hasrat Mohani in "Kahkashan’’.
Actress Deepti Naval had played his wife. Thus, Farooq Sheikh as Hasrat, Raj Zutshi as Jigar, Pareekshit Sahni as Josh and Irfan Khan as Makhdoom have played the characters to the expected narration. Among the entire actor, Parikshit Sahni played the role of Josh Malihabadi, and he gave a solid performance as faced then by the poet Josh when he was to migrate to Pakistan under the pressure of his family members. Till his death, he could not reconcile to this trauma or dilemma he faced.
Actor Irrfan Khan too had done justice to the hard hitting character of the communist leader and poet Makhdoom Mohiuddin. Nine poems of the leader Makhdoom was sung by veteran singers like Asha Bhonsle, Kumar Shanu, Vindo Sehgal and Jagjit Singh. Above all, the music composer Jagjit Singh had beautifully composed thirty poems in this series Kahkashan’ keeping in view the personality of the poets and their life which was narrated in the serial. The only drawback was that the series was too slow.
In one of the parts of the series and in the first part of the serial, it was shown Tanvi Azmi playing a strong woman character in the episodes of the serial. Also, one could find the producer Ali Sardar Jafri used poet Asrar-ul-Haq Majaz's poems as the title song in his series. Some of the finest Indian actors played the role of Urdu poet in this drama series, and they include, Raj Zutshi, Tanvi Azmi, Rakesh Pandey, Manohar Joshi and Fawad Sherani. In the part of ‘Asrarul Haq Majaz’, Tanvi Azmi played a strong character in the series. It was telecast on DD National. It was premiered even on TV Asia channel USA in 2006.
