Nukkad TV Serial - Doordarshan DD National (DD1)

Nukkad is a prominent Hindi serial, broadcasted on DD National channel from year 1986 to 1988. The serial was directed by Saeed Akhtar Mirza and Kundan Shah and was penned by Prabodh Joshi. Nukkad became one of the most popular serials during the 80’s on Doordarshan channel; the other two includes Buniyaad and Hum Log. It received a remarkable response from the audience and characters like Kaderbhai, Khopdi and Ghanshu Bhikari became very popular as well.

Nukkad’s first season was broadcasted from 1986 to 1987 and completed a total of 40 episodes. Each story is based on the daily issues of the low profile people and it usually revolves around a certain or two specific characters. Some stories ended with hope and positive results while some ends with melancholy but with sensible conclusion. It was based on the reality and simplicity that makes each episode more appealing and entertaining. It deals with the struggles that low income people are facing as they try to make a living in the cruel social and economic environment. They live altogether in the same street (Nukkad), where they share jokes, sentiments and unfulfilled dreams in the evening.

Because of its popularity, the makers re-launched the serial in year 1993 in a contemporary look and avatar entitled Naya Nukkad. The original characters were cast and the team added new faces, but it didn’t match the popularity that Nukkad gained during its peak. Dilip Dhawan was starred in the serial and portrayed the role of Guru, an electrician and the don of the Nukkad gang. Included in the ensemble cast are Avtar Gill, Pavan Malhorta, Haidar Ali, Sameer Khakhar, Javed Khan, Ajay Wadhavkar, Suresh Bhagwat, Rama Vij and a lot more.
