Soni Mahiwal’ was a TV series that was telecast on Doordarshan. It is a series where couple Varun Vadola and Shweta Kawatra played a hilarious Punjabi couple. The TV series is a hilarious narrative of a Punjabi couple who is married for a decade but sill catches up with arguments, quarrels on petty issues. Thus, they do share a bond of love-hate relationship. Each episode had shown a new storyline based on the couples’ thoughts and actions and how they lock horn with each other on the domestic issue.
Such concepts of daily conflicts are observed in every home. Every episode seems quite identifiable even with many of us. Hence, the series was very popular among middle- class family viewers. It was aired every Tuesday at 9 pm. Both Shweta and Varun had to capture the image of a Delhi family in the series, and it is said that both Shweta and Varun were selected for the serial because they belonged to Delhi. Basically, the script of soap was very humorous one, especially the way of dialogue delivery.
Varun Vadola played the role of a regular middle-class Punjabi character who works for an Insurance company and had all kinds of everyday problem with his wife. While Shweta Kawatra played the role of Varun’s wife, who has a new problem daily with him and at the same time the chemistry between the couple was very cute which every household could relate to it easily. It was a production of Ronnie Screwvala's production house, UTV meant for Doordarshan's national channel. Rajesh Puri directed the series. It was telecast in the year 2006.
The show aired on DD National (DD1) AKA Doordarshan. A state-owned general interest TV channel in our country India. It is the national channel which is available for free to anyone owning a TV set in this country.
This was a fictitious comedy show which revolved around a couple and the situations they encounter while trying to get their happily ever after. But what is more interesting is the journey they undertook. As the name suggests ‘Sohni Mahiwal’ is the famous couple who believed to have died for each other, the ultimate couple who sacrificed their lives and they can be compared to the likes other renowned couples in fables-like Romeo and Juliet, Heer and Raanjha, and Laila and Majnu.
The cultures, time periods, aside the end to these stories is the same. It is because of their ‘til death do us apart attitude, that they are still remembered in movies and songs. The story shows all the ups and downs a typical couple faces. irrespective of the era, the couple here tries to portray a story which is relatable to a modern couple. It is a belief that all those legendary couples lived in the time when the troubles were not relatable, but that’s a myth. Love penetrates in every era and faces opposition but finds the way to come out of it as the ultimate tale.
In the lead, actors Varun Badola and Shweta Kwatra who play the characters with finesse. The story starts off with them being a married couple and as the married life starts to untangle and reality sets in. All the relatives surrounding the couple play their part as adults who try to stir up problems in the lives of the couple. This can be relatable to some as that is how family is these days.
The show aired from 2006-2007 and then went off the air. The episodes are still available on some online platforms and some repeat telecasts which could be seen rarely on DD1. The story manifests hugely the actual relationship and the route which it follows. This is a complicated path. The plot has some twists to bring out the humorous and thought-provoking scenes to the story. The show is good for people who love light-hearted comedy.
